Generalized Deformations and the Role of Viscous Dissipation in Lipid Bilayers

Max C. Watson (University of California, Santa Barbara)

In the first part, I will present a unified continuum model for membrane elasticity which takes into account the effects of bending, compression, lipid orientation (tilting with respect to the monolayer normal), and microscopic noise (protrusions). The predicted thermal fluctuation spectra of several quantities are shown to be in excellent agreement with molecular simulations. In the second part, I will demonstrate how the effects of dissipation within bilayers can be used to account for the previously unexplained behavior observed with neutron spin echo spectroscopy.
