Molecular force and structure of nucleic acids assemblies

Our research aims to elucidate the behaviors of macromolecular complexes through quantitative studies of the underlying molecular force and structure. Combining neutron and x-ray scattering methods and existing physical theories, we have been studying nucleic acids assemblies that serve as excellent model systems and also carry broad impacts in biology, bioengineering and therapeutics. In this talk, we will first discuss ion-modulated long-range electrostatic interactions between DNA helices, one of the most highly charged biomolecules. We will then describe the measurements of DNA-DNA forces at short range that reveal the roles of hydration. Lastly, some recent studies will be presented including triple-strand DNA, tightly packaged DNA in bacteriophages, and DNA-CNT hybrids.
