ANSTO's OPAL Multi-purpose Research Reactor - 7 Years of Operation

Lubi Dimitrovski (Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation, Australia)

Mr Lubi Dimitrovski, General Manager for Nuclear Operations at the Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation located in Sydney, Australia will provide a talk on the commissioning and operations of the 20MW open pool light water (OPAL) research reactor since going critical in August 2006. The reliability of the OPAL reactor has increased with a target of 300 days/year operating at full power. The OPAL reactor has numerous capabilities allowing it to accommodate a broad range of needs for the Australian and international medical, industrial, scientific and mining communities. The capabilities include neutron beam research, radioisotope production, neutron activation analysis and silicon doping for the semiconductor industry. ANSTO is also embarking on a number of critical projects including a new molybdenum-99 facility and an associated processing and conditioning synroc facility (SyMo) to immobilise the resulting intermediate level liquid waste within a stable ceramic form.
